Its many educational facilities at the secondary and higher professional levels make Emmen the leading city for education in the Northern Netherlands. Every neighbourhood and village in the municipality has elementary schools. There are eight schools for special education. Emmen has three large comprehensive schools for lower secondary, upper secondary and higher secondary education (ranging from lower secondary vocational to pre-university education). Emmen also has lower and upper secondary agricultural education facilities. 

Upper secondary vocational education offers many possibilities, with courses in the fields of technology, agriculture and horticulture, economy, the services, health care, trade and administration. For those interested in higher professional education there is one institution they can apply to: the Stenden University higher education in engineering and technology, in economics and management, primary-school teacher training, and secondary and higher laboratory training. The newest educational facility attracting students from all over the world is the Northern Academy for Logistics. Stenden offers programmes in the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand, Quatar and Bali. Programmes are offered at bachelor, master level and certificate courses.

Appr. 2,500 students study in Emmen; appr. 800 come from Germany and appr. 200 from China. In addition, Emmen offers several day and evening courses for adults, an adult education centre, a study centre affiliated with the Open University, a Music School, and a Centre for Vocational Orientation and Training.
