Inhabitants:Emmen has 109,000 inhabitants, a number that makes it the largest municipality in Drenthe. Emmen is also a large municipality in terms of land surface, with great variety in types of landscape and residential centres: from large and small to tiny. Together, they supplement one another to fulfil the needs of a single city.
The principle population centres of the municipality are:
- the City of Emmen over 56,000 inhabitants;
- Klazienaveen over 12,100 inhabitants;
- Emmer-Compascuum about 8,000 inhabitants;
- Erica about 4,900 inhabitants;
- Nieuw-Amsterdam about 4,500 inhabitants;
- Veenoord over 2,200 inhabitants;
- Nieuw-Weerdinge almost 3,500 inhabitants;
- Zwartemeer over 3,100 inhabitants;
- Barger-Compascuum over 2,000 inhabitants;
- Nieuw-Dordrecht over 2,000 inhabitants;
- Roswinkel over 800 inhabitants;
- Schoonebeek about 4,800 inhabitants;
- Nieuw-Schoonebeek almost 1,400 inhabitants;
- Weiteveen about 1,700 inhabitants.
In addition to these locations, there are many more small population centres such as Oranjedorp, Klazienaveen-Noord, Emmer-Erfscheidenveen, Barger-Oosterveen, Willemsoord, Munsterseveld, Amsterdamseveld and Zandpol.
