Glasshouse horticulture
Glasshouse horticulture covers more area in Emmen than in any other municipality in the Northern Netherlands: 265 hectares under glass, with plenty of space for new locations. In just a few more years, Emmen expects to have 500 hectares covered by greenhouses. The growers here at the ‘Westland of the North’ enjoy fertile yet inexpensive land, clean yet inexpensive irrigation water, and such facilities as the Northern Netherlands Experimental Nursery, two large-scale thermaol power plants, an outstanding marketing location, and a wide diversity of horticultural education opportunities. Over 3,300 people are employed in the horticultural sector in Emmen.
